What is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when the oil-secreting glands in the skin are clogged and become inflamed. It is caused by an infection of the oil glands at the base of hairs. The hair follicle becomes clogged and bacteria grows in the clogged pores. As the body works to rid itself of the bacteria, whiteheads, blackheads and pustules form in those areas.

There are many different forms of acne and it's estimated that as many as 80% of teens have some form of acne, and up to 99% of the population has acne at some point in their lives.

Forms of Acne:

Blackhead: A clogged hair follicle gland that opens as it surfaces, the bacteria turns black when exposed to air.
Whitehead: A clogged hair follicle that remains closed as it surfaces
Nodule: A solid skin lesion that is often painful and buried deep in the skin.
Pustule: An inflamed, pus-filled area of skin infected by material from a ruptured whitehead (you know this as a pimple)
Cyst: A pustule gone bad, that goes deep into the skin and can lead to scarring. It's painful and inflamed.
Milia: White oil collection that looks like tiny skin bumps.

How do we treat Acne at BODY FOCUS?

Treating Acne today is easier and far more effective than

ever before. By combining therapies, such as SmoothBeam

Laser, Blu-U Blue Light with or without Levulan

   ("Photodynamic Therapy"),  Medical Microdermabrasion and

Acid Peels, clearing clogged pores, calming overactive

sebaceous glands and relieving inflammation can be done

without harmful oral drugs or harsh topical treatments.

Laser treatments create a photothermal reaction that releases oxygen, killing bacteria that causes acne break-outs. This helps prevent the infection that can cause the acne to spread.

Medical Microdermabrasion removes the build-up of dead cells that are glued in place, or unable to shed naturally. This type of build-up cloggs the pores and holds excess sebum or oil, creating a perfect growing environment for the bacteria to multiply. When Medical Microdermabrasion is combined with a treatment called OxyMist, scars can be dramatically reduced. Laser or acids then help rejuvenate the tissue, building strong, healthy skin.

Acids Peels, like Salicylic, help calm overactive sebaceous glands and reduce inflammation aiding in the healing process. Glycolic Peels build healthy collagen reducing scars and hyperpigmentation.

Blu-U and Levulan help the skin produce porfirins, enzymes necessary for healthy skin and often found absent with many forms of acne.

BLU-U BlueLight

Fighting Mild to Moderate Acne without Medication

BlueLight Acne Treatment is a faster solution to clearing acne than traditional oral and topical medication. By using light to kill acne bacteria, results are apparent more quickly. This extremely safe treatment can control your acne or clear it up for a long period.

How Blue Light Acne Treatment Works

When the skin is exposed to the high intensity ultraviolet light, the response is a creation of oxygen molecules inside the sebaceous gland that destroy the bacteria (called P.Acne's) and help the healing process. With the bacteria gone, acne begins to clear up and skin begins to heal.

Acne bacteria cannot live in the presence of oxygen. What makes Acne so difficult to control in many people is the "plugging" of the follicle by skin cells that have not been shed. This dead skin cell plug combined with oil from the sebaceous glands creates a perfect environment for acne by preventing oxygen from reaching the follicle. Blue-Light Treatments immediately go past the plug and destroy the bacteria.

What will my treatment be like?

Treatments are simple - you simply sit with your face close to the light for approximately 15 minutes. The procedure is noninvasive & pain-free. Once the treatment is done, patients can return to their daily routine. Typical schedules for patients who come to our Clinic are twice weekly for 4 weeks or weekly treatments for 8 weeks.

There are no side effects, no pain, and no photo-sensitivity so you can come in, have your treatment and immediately go back to your normal schedule of activities.

How effective is BlueLight?

The BLU-U system by Dusa effectively clears 50% of moderate, inflammatory acne in 4-8 weeks. Results are especially impressive when used with conventional treatments, such as topical creams and oral antibiotics. We may recommend exfoliation treatments such as acid peels along with your BlueLight Treatment to clear the skin of the dead cell plugs and blackheads.

Maintenance treatments may be required to maintain control of your acne.

What can I do if I have more severe acne?

Acne that is more severe or does not respond adequately to BlueLight alone, can be effectively treated with 2-step Photodynamic Acne Therapy.

Photodynamic Acne Therapy

Step 1: The first step is the application of the light-absorbing agent Levulan. This liquid is left on your skin for 45-60 minutes while it very selectively sinks into pimples, acne cysts and the overactive sebaceous glands that feed acne bacteria. The absorption of the Levulan essentially turns the acne and oil glands into "targets" for the next step - light.

Step 2: The unabsorbed Levulan is removed from your skin and you are placed under a special blue light. This light is drawn to the "targets", strong oxygen radicals are formed and bacteria responsible for the acne is killed.

Levulan is a "smart" solution. It is only absorbed by

abnormal cells such as those in acne conditions,

precancerous actinic keratoses, and sun damage.

It is the selectivity of this solution in targeting only bad

cells that allows such quick success in restoring skin to a

   healthy normal condition.

This treatment goes to the next level by combining a topical solution and either a light source such as BlueLight and/or a laser such as SmoothBeam which will also remove much of the redness from acne scars.

Brown spots left behind by acne (hyperpigmentation) can be diminished by use of chemical peels, topical skin de-pigmentation products and laser.

Laser Acne Treatment

SmoothBeam Laser is a new effective treatment for:

Acne

Acne Scarring

Wrinkles

What is Smoothbeam Laser?

This is a laser procedure in which a beam of light at a specific wavelength is applied to the skin and is absorbed by the collagen in the skin, as well as sebaceous glands.

What is Smoothbeam Laser used for?

Smoothbeam Laser is used for acne, acne scarring on the face and back. It is also used for wrinkles. The laser works by targeting and heating the collagen and sebaceous glands in the dermis while protecting the epidermis. A cooling device cools and protects the skin’s surface.

What are the possible side effects from Smoothbeam Laser treatment?

Possible side effects include hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin in the treated area) and hyperpigmentation (darker skin in the treated area) and redness. Although scarring has been reported this is unusual. Occasionally, this laser is not effective.

Are there any pre-treatment procedures?

The skin being lasered must not be tanned. If the patient has a history of cold sores in the area to be treated, a prescription for an anti-viral medication will be given to you to be started the day before the laser procedure and taken for a few days afterwards. Patients who have had Accutane for acne may not have laser for at least six months (and possibly one year) after stopping Accutane.

How is Smoothbeam Laser performed?

After the patient has had the topical anesthetic cream on for 30 minutes, the patient is placed in a comfortable, relaxed position. The Smoothbeam handpiece is applied to the skin to deliver the laser light. A cooling device is used at the same time so that the patient feels a spray of coolant on the skin just before each laser pulse. Dark glasses are worn to protect the patient’s eyes from the light.

How long is each treatment?

The treatment takes approximately 20-30 minutes. Generally patients may return to work or to their usual activities after the laser treatment. Patients usually experience some redness, which may last one to two days.

How many treatments will I need?

In general, patients have two to six treatments, approximately every four to six weeks.

How do I take care of my skin after the Smoothbeam Laser treatment?

Cool compresses applied to the treated area help to reduce redness, swelling and discomfort. Gentle skin care is advisable after each treatment. Avoid scrubbing with abrasive cleansers. It is important to protect all your skin from the sun using a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day as well as sun protective clothing.

When will I see results?

Results become visible gradually after two to six treatments. New collagen formation starts after the first laser treatment, but takes time to become visibly improved.
